The United Church of Canada’s General Council is a national gathering which meets every three years to elect a new Moderator and to approve new church policies.
The 40th General Council will take place August 9 to 15, 2009, at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Okanagan in Kelowna, B.C. In addition to almost 400 delegates called commissioners, more than 300 guests, observers, youth, children, staff, and volunteers will be present for the week-long gathering.
As a commissioner, I was elected as a lay delegate by Hamilton conference, which is one of the church’s 13 regional Conferences. The commissioners represent an equal number of lay and ordered men and women.
The theme of the 40th General Council 2009 will be “Down to the Potter’s House” It is based on Jeremiah 18:1-6, which follows from The Message translation: “God told Jeremiah, “Up on your feet! Go to the potter’s house. When you get there, I’ll tell you what I have to say.” So I went to the potter’s house, and sure enough, the potter was there, working away at his wheel. Whenever the pot the potter was working on turned out badly, as sometimes happens when you are working with clay, the potter would simply start over and use the same clay to make another pot. Then God’s Message came to me: “Can’t I do just as this potter does, people of Israel?” ”
Kinda feels like our work, sometimes, if it doesn’t work, just take the same materials and start over.
