Facebook status update: bar or billboard

Consider your Facebook status update. For many of us, it is just a note to friends, saying “heh, this is on my mind today”.

It’s similair to walking into Cheers, plunking on a stool and having Sam know by a quick glance how Norm is doing.

Yet, that Facebook message can be a tool. It can be how you sell material, tell a freind you need a hand, let people know about an event, or invite individuals to a cause.

When combined with the “like” functionality, one has power to affect what a friend’s friends see. If I “like” your status, then there is a greater likelihood it will be seen by others.

I’m curious, how many folks have started using their status updates in this way? For those who have, what have you noticed?
